The word doula is derived from the Greek word “Doulos” which meant slave or servant. Our modern use of the word in the birth field has come to mean “a woman care giver”. The word is now widely accepted as meaning an experienced labor companion who provides the woman and her husband emotional and physical support throughout the entire labor and delivery process.
The care doesn’t just start at the time of labor though, I provide care and counsel before the onset of labor with private appointments to work through relaxation and exercise techniques. I am available by phone anytime you have questions or need to talk.
Initially we will get to know one another and talk about prior birth experiences, if this relates. We will talk about your desires for the present birth. We will discuss how you and your partner want to work together and my involvement in the birth.
Resources are available to educate you on nutrition, relaxation and exercise. We also study the physiology of birth so you know what your body is doing during the process of labor. We would meet one to three times prior to your birth.
With the onset of labor, the laboring couple chooses when to have my assistance. Once I am there with the laboring couple I provide continuous support throughout labor and delivery. I stay postpartum to help establish breastfeeding usually one or two hours after the birth.
